Rethinking Sugar

Intelligent Sugar is an informational platform dedicated to the work and philosophy of Dr Johannes Coy, the Intelligent Sugar Expert. A German biochemist and cancer researcher, Dr Coy discovered the TKTL1 gene, and his research into how cells use sugar led to the idea at the heart of this site: that not all sugars behave the same way in the body.

Our purpose is to share that thinking, clearly and openly. We bring together Dr Coy’s philosophy, his own research, and independent studies, so that anyone can understand how sugars such as tagatose, galactose, isomaltulose and trehalose differ from ordinary sugar, and what that can mean for the way we eat.

Our bodies run on sugar as a basic fuel, but not in the amounts common in the modern Western diet. On a global scale, we aim to inform people about the effects of eating too much ordinary sugar, in particular sucrose, glucose and fructose, and to explain how Dr Coy’s lower-glycaemic sugars behave differently, raising blood glucose more gently.

Our wider hope is a food culture that leans less on conventional sugar and makes more room for these alternatives, used in everyday cooking and in the products people buy. We are not here to sell you anything, but to lay out the science and the ideas so you can make informed choices for yourself.

Think of Intelligent Sugar as Dr Coy’s thinking made accessible: a place to explore his research, his philosophy, and the possibilities these sugars open up in the way we eat. The more you understand about what is in your sugar bowl, the better placed you are to decide what belongs there.
